The Historic Carnival of Ivrea is unlike anything else: a celebration of freedom that mixes medieval legend, Napoleonic uniforms and the famous Battle of the Oranges, where teams on foot fight against carts representing the tyrant’s army.
It can be overwhelming if you don’t know the rules. I’ll take you through the day step by step: the rituals, the symbols, the best (and safest) places to watch, and of course the traditional food.
Wear the red cap and you are officially part of the festival.
